Avocado is the veritable fruit of paradise

What is Avocado?

Avocado is a tree, likely originating from south-central Mexico. But the more familiar part of the avocado tree is the fruit, also called an avocado (or avocado pear and sometimes even alligator pear - because of its prickly skin). It is actually a berry containing a single large seed.

Avocados are really rich in good fat with 60% being monounsaturated fats. They are rich in fiber, folate, and potassium. The secret is that this berry is also rich in biotin and the minerals from avocado oil help your hair look shiny and prevent it from breaking.

Where does avocado come from?

Even though we don't know for sure, it is most likely that avocado comes from the south and central Mexico. Today it is grown in many Mediterranean countries, but Mexico is still the world's largest producer. It is a tree, and avocado fruit is actually a berry.

Depending on the variety, avocados have green, brown, purplish, or black skin when ripe, and they also come in different shapes such as pear-shaped, egg-shaped, or spherical. Fossil evidence was found suggesting that avocado originated in Puebla, Mexico. More precisely in the Tehuacan Valley some 9000 to 10000 years ago.

The word avocado comes from Spanish aguacate but it bears many different names, some historical and some modern.

Avocados need a climate without frost and with little wind. They need a lot of hydration to become the fruit rich in nutrients that we use today. It takes approximately 70 liters of water, not counting rainfall or natural moisture, to grow an avocado. Similar to bananas, avocado matures on the tree but ripens off the tree, so the berry is harvested before being ripe.

Avocado is used for many different purposes, but whatever it is it is always regarded as a great source of minerals, healthy fats, and vitamins.
