Where does orange blossom come from?
Orange blossom is the white flower of the bitter orange tree, also known as wild orange. The bitter orange tree is a close cousin to sweet orange and lemon trees. This tree has been growing for centuries in sun-drenched lands such as the Mediterranean Sea, from Italy to Spain, Morocco, and Tunisia.
The flowers appear in the spring, they are delicate and very fragrant, and they late produce small fruit called bitter orange. According to history, the orange blossom is native to India and China and it was all the rage in Arabia before reaching Spain in the 9th century. Since the 17th century, the south of France is the home of the most renowned orange blossom fields, although the major of production is located in Morocco and Tunisia. The flowers are grouped in small bunches near the leaves and harvested by hand between April and May, and a fun fact: Harvesting takes place at dawn when the flower is most fragrant.
